Passenger Cars

Early railroad lines initially provided hauling services for many types of products. In an effort to increase their revenue, railroads began providing transportation services for people. During the first half of the 20th century, these services were more efficient than the predominate means of travel such as the horse and buggy and even the first generation automobile. The passenger train quickly became an essential mode of transportation, especially for those living in metropolitan cities.

Lionel also realized the need to include passenger trains in their product line. From its tin-plate prewar carryover cars, to updated plastic coaches and even the realistic streamlined cars, Lionel produced minature versions of passenger cars frequently seen on the real railroads. Even the Civil War-era simulated wooden coaches had a brief appearance in the Lionel family during the postwar years.
