History
The 6441 Observation Passenger car is simply a continuation of the 2441 observation
passenger car manufactured in 1946 and 1947. The only difference being the 6441 now
contained the updated magnetic couplers instead of the earlier style coil couplers.
All Lionel sets sold in 1948 and 1949 contained two 6440 pullman cars along with a single 6441 observation car. All sets were pulled by a middle-of-the-line Lionel steam locomotive such as the 2025 or 2026 steamer.
These early postwar all-metal style passenger cars carried over much of the charm and toy-like characteristics of their prewar cousins. Although they were soon replaced in the postwar ear with more realistic and detailed looking plastic passenger cars, there is still a large audience preferring these classic, all-metal Lionel passenger cars.
Features
Standard features on the 6441 Observation include: green painted bodies with
dark green painted roofs, cream painted doors and windows, non-silhouetted plastic window
inserts, interior illuminated, aluminum observation railings plus staple-end trucks with
a single magnetic coupler.
