History
The 497 Coaling Station was Lionelís final coal handling accessory introduced during the postwar era. Not surprisingly, itís also one of the most reliable, dependable and efficient coal moving accessories produced by Lionel. Unlike the earlier 97 or 397 coal loaders -- which frequently spilled as much coal as they moved Ė the 497 was designed to move coal with peak efficiency. Nonetheless, collectors and operators will argue a large part of the allure of the 97 and 397 is watching the unpredictability of the coal as it ends up in a freight car or on your layout!

Lionel designed a compact, unique controller used only on this accessory. It had two handles which controlled four functions. It was an efficient and durable controller which rarely needs repair. And like all other postwar Lionel coal loading accessories, the 497 did not include a freight car.

For all of the improvements Lionel included with the 497, a common flaw with this accessory are the roof tabs on the underside of the accessory. Usually one tab is frequently broken, sometimes both. Locating an original postwar roof with complete, undamaged roof tabs is rare.

Features
The 497 Coaling Station includes the following standard features: gray base, black support posts, red and maroon elevated holding bin and a green roof. The maroon hopper -- which transports the coal from the track to the elevated bin -- is plastic.

The controller has a black plastic cover with white lettering. This controller is permanently wired to the accessory.

Additional Detail, Photos & Box Information
For the majority of its production run, the 497 included a light green roof. However, the first production run in 1953 had a dark green roof with small roof attachment tabs on the underside. Additionally, the final production run in 1958 included a dark green roof, but this time with larger attachment tabs.

Dark Green Roof - An uncommon variation from mid 1953 and 1958.
Light Green Roof - Shown in the photo above - The most common version.
